Keep Digging (And Savor the Moments Along the Way)

by Dr. Tonya Caylor
Jun 12, 2025

Dinner was beautiful. A nice evening, bold flavors, shared stories of challenge & success, and laughter with friends who are in simlar trenches.

The meal came with this quote came tucked in tableware:

“Work. Keep digging your well. Water is there somewhere.”

It stayed with me—not just because it was wise, but because it met me in a season that’s been full of effort. Of showing up. Of planting without certainty of the harvest.

Sometimes the "work" looks like paperwork. Sometimes it’s holding space for someone else’s doubt. And sometimes (thankfully) it’s slowing down enough to taste grilled tomatoes, warm bread, and ice cream dusted with pistachios.

Reflection: What’s keeping you digging right now? And what’s nourishing you while you do?

The CBME pilot participants showed us what it looks like to lead through the mess. They navigated growing pains, limited time and faculty, skeptical colleagues an...
Leaders and Legacy Reflection
When physicians or faculty leaders are struggling in their roles—or with certain parts of them—I often ask: "When you think of a leader you admire, what qualities stand out?" They usually name things such as integrity. Strength. Clinical wisdom. Courage. Kindness. Collaboration. And almost always—without me bringing it up—they also say: “But they didn’t have balance.” or “They worked all the ti...
