Winning Reflections

by Dr. Tonya Caylor
Jun 11, 2025

As we close out 2024, I want to point our minds toward the wins. What you learned, what impact you made, how you grew, etc. You all know it's one area I like to be intentional and savor.

Last week, my own coach just elevated the process for me by 1. recognizing something I was unknowingly doing and making it explicit, 2. memorializing it with a powerful quote.

We had just worked through a meeting I led, and I had reflected on both the things that went well and the things that needed improving next time (I'm also a big fan of "reflecting on" to "reflect in" down the road.)

Overall, my energy level was high about our progress as a team in processes, actions, and dynamics, among other items.

I spontaneously reviewed with her the processes I went through both before and in the meeting - what intention I'd set, communication approaches, and the mindset.

After my review, I was proud that I've grown in my ability to celebrate the wins instead of ruminating only on negative assumptions - even without prompting. I shared that with my coach.

She pointed out:

"You did more than celebrate the wins, Tonya. Celebrating the wins is one thing. Reflecting on what made it possible, makes it repeatable."

Boom. Big wisdom nugget there for you. Enjoy!

The Myth of Ready
This week, I tried a simple AI morning brain-warm-up experiment at the suggestion of Alex Morgan from The Neuron. I gave ChatGPT this reflective prompt: Share one interesting assumption I might hold without realizing. The response: Sometimes we assume we need clarity before weโ€™re allowed to move. That immediately reminded me of a reflection I wrote a while back. Iโ€™m resharing it here, because I...
The Casting Room
Iโ€™ve been reflecting on how easily past training experiences (or any experience for that matter) can be oversimplified by those who didnโ€™t live them. It took me a minute to understand why that bothered me. It's because those oversimplified accounts tell a very narrow story of some of the very experiences that shaped me. Realizing that made me want to write about one specific moment. Not to glor...
Progress Through Process
Iโ€™ve been spending a lot of time lately in complex work with many moving parts: helping design a longitudinal faculty coach training with the STFM CBME Faculty Coach Training initiative, and collaborating with colleagues through an AMA-funded Precision Medicine education grant with GAFP. In both projects, the challenge is the same: taking large, complex work and making it manageable. For me, th...
