Toolbox Reflection

by Dr. Tonya Caylor
May 31, 2025

I love to give Physician Toolbox Talks (a term I felt fitting) to residents in which they expand their toolkit in order to navigate the demands of training and being in medicine at such a time as this.

When activated and trying to emotionally regulate, in addition to your grounding and centering practices - such as breath work and use of your senses, I'd like to offer you an "activation kit" wrapped in that imaginary blue sterilized paper with brown tape.

Which of the following will serve you now?

  1. Empathy/Compassion (often in the form of perspective taking)
  2. Curiosity
  3. Creativity (often toward a goal of partnering)
  4. Acceptance
  5. Seeking the positive in the midst of the unpleasant

What other instruments would you pack in this kit?

Pick Up the Phone

I initially reacted from momentary frustration. Becoming a coach does not uninstall the old neural pathways. Under the right conditions (low on sleep, skipping workouts, doing too much), they still know e...
The River Gets Wider
Just prior to marrying my husband, his dad handed us an article torn from a magazine. It used the imagery of two rivers coming together to describe marriage. The gist that stuck with my young mind was:1. Don’t be shocked by the rapids. They’re a natural outcome of two forces merging.2. Marriage will have twists and turns, rocks and islands to navigate, but given the right conditions, the river ...
