The Power of a Smile: Story and Reflection

by Dr. Tonya Caylor
Jun 12, 2025

During the half-day virtual faculty development workshop that I co-led this past week, one thing stood out to me: my co-presenter, Dr. Rae Wright, was always smiling and actively present. Her smile looked so genuine—like she was truly enjoying hearing me speak and appreciating how I was presenting (even if that wasn’t the case, it sure felt that way).

It struck me how powerful a simple smile can be. Rae’s steady, encouraging presence made me feel appreciated and supported, like I was doing a fantastic job. It was reassuring and energizing in a way that made me feel connected and confident, even over Zoom.

Thinking back, I realize that without Rae’s warm, consistent smile, I might have spent more time second-guessing myself, wondering if my words were landing or if I needed to be doing it differently. Instead, her smile created a sense of connection that made the experience feel meaningful and effective - and allowed me to present as my best self.

It was a beautiful reminder of how simple gestures can transform an experience—just like how a bit of warmth and light can coax new growth in the greenhouse.

Reflection: Who needs your smile this week?

What’s one small thing that brightens your day and leaves you feeling renewed?

The Myth of Ready
This week, I tried a simple AI morning brain-warm-up experiment at the suggestion of Alex Morgan from The Neuron. I gave ChatGPT this reflective prompt: Share one interesting assumption I might hold without realizing. The response: Sometimes we assume we need clarity before we’re allowed to move. That immediately reminded me of a reflection I wrote a while back. I’m resharing it here, because I...
The Casting Room
I’ve been reflecting on how easily past training experiences (or any experience for that matter) can be oversimplified by those who didn’t live them. It took me a minute to understand why that bothered me. It's because those oversimplified accounts tell a very narrow story of some of the very experiences that shaped me. Realizing that made me want to write about one specific moment. Not to glor...
Progress Through Process
I’ve been spending a lot of time lately in complex work with many moving parts: helping design a longitudinal faculty coach training with the STFM CBME Faculty Coach Training initiative, and collaborating with colleagues through an AMA-funded Precision Medicine education grant with GAFP. In both projects, the challenge is the same: taking large, complex work and making it manageable. For me, th...
