Question Reflection

by Dr. Tonya Caylor
Jun 08, 2025

In this week's Joy FM Snippet, I invite you to reflect on the automatic questions you ask yourself on the regular.

Our brains are wired to look for and deliver answers. So if you ask things like, "What is wrong with me?" then your brain will go looking for all the answers. You likely will feel worse when the answers are received.

Learn to ask yourself better questions - What is going well? How can I improve?

Now, if the first-order answer your brain gives is "nothing" or "I don't know" - get out of its way and ask again. You'll be amazed at what things you come up with.

Better questions is a more adaptive way to get to where you want to go than finding faults with yourself where you are.

I'd love to hear your up-leveled questions.

Power of Conversation, Story and Invitation

My brain went to the tactical: referrals, shared patients, thank-yous. (These are still paramount. Doing your due diligence with workups, sending thoughtful referrals, and expressing appreciation to your partners in a patient’s care, ...
Right Pause, Right Time Story and Reflection
Years ago, I was leading a medical team in Southeast Asia after the tsunami. Infrastructure was gone, local health workers were either missing or tending to their own communities, and our team, hosted by a local NGO, was running long, hot, and emotionally heavy days. One morning, something was off. Normally steady and cohesive, team members were sharp-edged, drained, disjointed. The local lead ...
