Extra Mile Reflection

by Dr. Tonya Caylor
Jun 03, 2025

This photo is a throw-back to when my dad had been stuck in his recliner for a couple of days due to severe worsening metastatic bone pain to his hip. It only hurt if he moved his leg. So after scrambling to get the family to be with him, he had a telemedicine visit with his primary care doc who went above and beyond. With that visit, on her own initiative, she did the heavy lift of jumping through the hoops to get him a wheelchair. It was so good to see him smile - he could move independently and even get outside for the first time in a couple of weeks.

That's when I stopped using the phrase "Indirect Patient Care Activities" - because the term inadvertently seems to indicate less important/pressing. But seeing first-hand the huge difference it made directly on my dad's quality of life, I now refer to it as "Asynchronous Patient Care."

So this pause is to reflect on anything that comes to mind - the difference language makes, making an impact with seemingly annoying paperwork and calls, gratitude, or anything else. Have a joy-filled week! Tonya

PS. Thank you all for thankless, frustrating tasks. You may never know the impact. But you can think of my dad and his smile. ๐Ÿ˜Š

The Myth of Ready
This week, I tried a simple AI morning brain-warm-up experiment at the suggestion of Alex Morgan from The Neuron. I gave ChatGPT this reflective prompt: Share one interesting assumption I might hold without realizing. The response: Sometimes we assume we need clarity before weโ€™re allowed to move. That immediately reminded me of a reflection I wrote a while back. Iโ€™m resharing it here, because I...
The Casting Room
Iโ€™ve been reflecting on how easily past training experiences (or any experience for that matter) can be oversimplified by those who didnโ€™t live them. It took me a minute to understand why that bothered me. It's because those oversimplified accounts tell a very narrow story of some of the very experiences that shaped me. Realizing that made me want to write about one specific moment. Not to glor...
Progress Through Process
Iโ€™ve been spending a lot of time lately in complex work with many moving parts: helping design a longitudinal faculty coach training with the STFM CBME Faculty Coach Training initiative, and collaborating with colleagues through an AMA-funded Precision Medicine education grant with GAFP. In both projects, the challenge is the same: taking large, complex work and making it manageable. For me, th...
