Meet the Coach

Tonya Caylor, MD, FAAFP, founded Joy in Family Medicine Coaching Services® after realizing physician coaching's power and seeing a paucity of it at the residency level. She developed a curriculum and coaching program to give physicians the tools they need to enjoy their lives and reconnect with joy in their chosen careers. She remains active clinically as on-call faculty for the Alaska Family Medicine Residency and for the local FQHC.

Experience and Parternships

Dr. Caylor has had over 24 years of post-residency clinical experience, 16 of those years involving academic medicine at the residency level. She completed the faculty development fellowship through the University of Washington. She serves as the coach for the Hybrid UW and Madigan Faculty Development Program. She partners with the Behavioral Health Faculty at the Alaska Family Medicine Residency to deliver Physician Toolbox Talks to residents. She also partners with several family medicine residency programs as an external coach to deliver group and individual coaching to residents and faculty, as well as works directly with many individual physicians.  In addition to her own coaching program, Dr. Caylor works with top-notch programs that offer coaching to faculty and trainees across specialties: Coaching for Institutions, AMWA Evolve, and Better Together Physician Coaching. Through these programs, she's had the opportunity to coach within research studies at Mayo and with CU. She also donates coaching sessions through STFM's virtual coaching program. Casey Kernan, MD

Residency is hard.  I think we all question, at some point our abilities and our purpose in medicine.  Professional coaching was new to me but Tonya made it valuable, convenient and fun.  She is a joy to work with and helped me find the joy in family medicine. I highly recommend her to anyone in medicine that experiences burnout, frustration in their careers or simply needs to refocus.
